Is it possible to change your self-limiting beliefs?
The answer is ‘yes’, you can change your self-limiting beliefs.
Before launching into strategies for making positive changes, though, let’s explore and gain some clarity around the concepts of self-esteem, self-confidence, and self-belief. What are they and what do they have to do with where you’re at now and where you’re heading?
Self-esteem
Self-esteem is an individual’s assessment of their worth as a person. It is a subjective evaluation and is not necessarily a reflection of talents or abilities. Furthermore, recent longitudinal studies extending over decades suggest that self-esteem shows trait-like stability over long periods of time. In other words, irrespective of the up’s and down’s we all experience during a lifetime, self-esteem, whilst not immutable, doesn’t tend to continuously fluctuate in response to these events. Primarily, self-esteem rises, steadies and falls across a lifetime.1Orth, U & Robins, RW 2014. The Development of Self-Esteem. Current Directions in Psychological Science, 23, 381-387
